WWE Smackdown Recap (30th May 2017)

The show opens with short vignette style promos from all of the women in the fatal 5-way match. They remind me of the old promos you used to get from Royal Rumble competitors. It's a nice change.

In ring we start with Kevin Owens hosting the Highlight Reel. He says that even though Jericho invented the Money In The Bank match he never won one. He is better than Jericho though so he will win this one. He then announces his guest, Shinsuke Nakamura. Owens is not impressed by Nakamura and tells him to stop dancing and not to show up at MITB. Baron Corbin comes out to show highlights of him beating up Sami Zayn. Owens is unimpressed again as he has been beating up Zayn for 15 years. Nakamura makes some points to Owens and Corbin but gets attacked by both of them. Zayn makes the save and sets up a Teddy Long style tag match, playa. This was your standard show opening promo. It did what it needed to do.

Sami Zayn & Shinsuke Nakamura vs Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin - This was a good match. It lasted about 10 minutes which was the perfect length of time for this. Shinsuke and Sami got the win after dissension between the heels allowed Nakamura to hit the Kinshasa and get the pin. That is 2 weeks in a row that he has pinned Owens. This will lead to either a feud between the 2 or between Naks and AJ Styles, as AJ hasn't beat Owens but he has.

The Usos are out to tell the fans that they will beat any team. This brings out the New Day, making their return. Woods is happy to be in his home town. The Usos make fun of New Day for skipping and talk about the Uso Penitentiary again. Woods says that they will take the titles at MITB. Decent segment and it will be intriguing to see if the New Day can raise the SD tag division to an acceptable level.

We get a recap of Jinder Mahal's Punjabi celebration from last week. Say what you like about if Jinder deserves this or not, they are booking him well.

It's time for a new episode of the Fashion Files, this time shot in a noir style. I like old noir movies and I liked this.

Charlotte Flair vs Tamina vs Carmella vs Becky Lynch vs Natalya (Number 1 Contenders Match) - The match didn't start as they all just attacked each other and brawled at ringside. It was an awesome brawl too. Plenty of action, good use of the ringside area, a powerbomb through the announce table, it was great fun.

Shane McMahon came out to say that as they didn't get a winner there would be the first ever women's MITB ladder match. If it is anything like that brawl then colour me intrigued. The difference between this segment and the This Is Your Life segment from Raw is incredible. If you book the women's division as badass wrestlers that will do whatever they have to then that's what they will be. If you book then to look like bitches or naive, immature children then that's what they will be.

Fashion Police vs The Colons - This is essentially the same as the Fashion Police match at Backlash, lots of comedy and outfits. If you liked that then you will like this. I'm not really a fan of how WWE does comedy matches though.

AJ Styles is being interviewed when Dolph Ziggler turns up and says that he has already won MITB and successfully cashed in.

Randy Orton is here to tell people that he doesn't need to talk about what he is going to do at MITB, then tells people what he is going to do at MITB. Jinder appears on the screen to run down Orton and America. It was a thing.

AJ Styles vs Dolph Ziggler - This was a good main event but definitely not as good as it could have been. Ziggler picked up the win to give him some heat by beating the the home town hero. It didn't work.

Thoughts

I enjoyed this show. It had a couple of good matches and a fantastic brawl between the women's division. It also had the return of the New Day. Good all round.
